LIFE IN BRAZIL
Angelica was born in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil where she lived until 1994. In Brazil she obtained her BA in Music Ministry and subsequently a BS in Computer Science. During that time Angelica became known as a respected Music Director by the religious and secular communities.
Angelica pursued a Computer Science degree while working as music director, attending a rigorous course in Business Analysis & Computer Programming at PUC, Rio de Janeiro in the evening. While attending her senior college year in the evening, Angelica worked a full-time trainee job for MESBLA Financial Institution.
Angelica's professionalism and competence led her to an opportunity as Business/Systems Analyst with Pepsi-Cola Brazil. Angelica remembers fondly her time at PepsiCo and the friends she made. PepsiCo's global operation opened new horizons to Angelica, and she became interested in pursuing an MBA in the USA. Angelica, whose second language had been French, left Brazil in 1985 to immerse in an intensive English program at Boston University and pursue her MBA dream. While Angelica benefited from the support and encouragement of many friends, her sister Zelita and friend Paulo Espindula were key motivators .
FAMILY BACKGROUND
Born in a working class family, Angelica's heritage was enriched by her parents ability to overcome their childhood misfortunes and establish a vision for their children. Angelica’s father, born in 1914, lost both parents at the age of 6 and was raised in a Catholic orphanage in Bahia, Brazil where he developed appreciation for classical music, learned to play French horn, and and received vocational training as a newspaper composer. Angelica’s mother, born from Portuguese and Swiss ancestors, was raised on a farm in Rio de Janeiro province Brazil. She lost her mother at the age of 13 and her father at age 17. As one of the oldest of 13 children she decided to leave the farm and get a job as seamstress to help support her siblings instead of getting married, which would be a common fate in that time. She spent much of her young adult life helping them until she met Waldemar, the poet at age 36. They married on December 28, 1949 and had three children: Suzana, Zelita and Angelica.
Waldemar and Judith were a constant source of encouragement and support to their daughters academic development and sought out other opportunities to enrich their cultural background. Through such efforts Angelica was able to learn music and ballet, normally inaccessible to working families. Their example of faith, courage, hard work and determination are Angelica’s rich family inheritance.
LIFE IN USA
In 1994, Angelica left Brazil to attend Boston University's Intensive English Summer Program and after that she was hired as Technology Consultant for Waterfield Technology Group, Inc in Lexington MA. Angelica continued working hard to advance her English skills and eventually resumed the same responsibilities she had at PepsiCo Brazil.
In Massachusetts, Angelica became very involved with her church - Grace Chapel --with the evening music program, Internationals Ministry, teaching children's Sunday School and in the role of an Assistant Elder. Angelica met Dr. White through Grace Chapel's International Ministry and they found having a common life purpose of serving the international communities, Dr. White through Sustainable International Development and Angelica through Sustainable Business Development. Angelica and Wayne were married for 21 years when life took them in different directions.
After working as Consultant to various industries with Waterfield Technology Group, Angelica worked five years for Fidelity Investment and subsequently became a board member of Foresight International Organization which had as its mission " to support development among the least resourced people of the world" LIFE IN ASIA. In 2005, the Whites moved to Atlanta Georgia through Angelica's work and at the end of the same year they moved to Jakarta, Indonesia where Wayne worked for two years in Tsunami Relief efforts and other development program leadership . Atlanta, however, was now the home for the Whites where great friendships were developed.
Asia is a fascinating place to visit and despite the difficulties Angelica faced adjusting to life in a city with more than 12 million people, Jakarta Indonesia, her experience was very educational and eye opening. Visits to Singapore, a one hour flight from Jakarta, were debriefing times and an opportunity to reflect on these countries different developmental trajectories. Most of all I treasure the people that I became friends with and highly respect their efforts in further sustainable development of their country.
Angelica also spent two weeks in Kathmandu , Nepal with a Grace Chapel team working with orphans, promoting micro-economic projects and conducting trainings. She helped her spouse to found Foresight International Inc to foster development among indigenous people. The family returned from Indonesia in 2007 during the Avian flu outbreak in Jakarta.
When the family returned to Atlanta in 2008, Angelica could not find an opportunity to re-enter the workforce, so she decided to reignite a dream of starting her own business. This time with the purpose of creating jobs for herself and other mothers, because women should not be penalized from taking time off the workforce to raise the future generations. She faced resistance from her spouse for lacking the business knowledge to succeed in starting a business, so Angelica went back to school in 2008 during the weekends, and graduated in May 2010 with an MBA from Goizueta Business School, and was recipient of her class Entrepreneurship Award.
MOST RECENTLY
Angelica is currently pursuing the developing of ZippyAR and BoldLivingWear startups and consulting with Zetta Consultants. She also advocates for equitable investment to women entrepreneurs. Women in 2018 received less than 3% of all capital available to startups, and women minorities receive less than 1%.
Going through her divorce, Angelica learned that many mothers end in poverty for lacking the financial resources for retaining legal representation. She is very passionate about creating jobs, specially for mothers.
Her passion for sustainability is imprinted in the vision set forward to her businesses which is highlighted here...
“Our purpose on Earth is to help companies and individuals to connect at a personal level using innovative ways to strengthen humankind towards sustainable relations, environmental practices and governance.
